1. The bicycle is not moving. No forces are acting upon it.
2. The girl starts to pedal. She uses force to move the pedals.
3. The force of her pedalling is the same as the force of friction. Her speed stays the same.
4. The girl wants to go faster. She pedals faster, so her speed increases.
5. The girl wants to slow down, so she stops pedalling. Friction slows the bicycle down.

a. The clown throws the ball in the air. First the ball goes fast, but then the force of gravity acts on the ball, and it goes more slowly.
b. The ball loses speed until it stops at the highest point. Then, gravity makes the ball start to fall. It goes more slowly until the clown catches it.  
c. Gravity decreases speed on the way up and increases speed on the way down.
